That jump in grain demand has long been predicted and, as I understand it, so far is following predictions. It is because of the growing prosperity in China combined with their growing agricultural water deficit -- in terms of international trade, grain=water, and the lack of agricultural water means China can't produce enough grain to provide the meat that newly prosperous Chinese want to buy.
