pathetic, and pretty shameful that I have to share a gender with pricks of that magnitude, but it's not as if ignorance discriminates based on skill in a field. it's the willful idiocy that really gets to me. /disgust

this is exactly what these guys did when they got hassled by Games Workshop (who are notorious wankers when it comes to this stuff, I hear). They made a tribute / fan game recreating the Space Hulk board game, maybe a decade plus after the last Space Hulk game IP had been released...

They changed the name to Alien Assault, tweaked some art assets and any specific universe references, and now they're completely in the clear. It's the EXACT same game, just minus the free promotion for Games Workshop.

Epic fail, facepalm, and slow clap all around...

stick it to 'em

(only games workshop thing I have is the deluxe edition 20th anniversary edition of Space Hulk which I got myself for Christmas, largely on word of mouth merits via and playing this little gem of a game. and yet they hit the geek with a cease and desist awhile back too -- it was on slashdot...)

wow. they don't just look a gift horse in the mouth, they actually pull out the shotgun and put one between its eyes for good measure.

Myst Online: Uru Live Returns As Free-To-Play 58

agrif writes "Shorah b'shemtee! Uru Live has been released for free, as a first step towards opening its source. This game, an MMO released by the makers of Myst and Riven in 2003, has been canceled, zombified, resurrected, canceled again, and is now about to be released as open source to its dedicated fan base. Massively has written a brief newbie guide if you're unfamiliar with the game."

I'll look into donating a bit of my student budgeted cash to the CCFC as you referenced it. I can easily forgo the occasional binge drinking session for your sake, so the relatively tiny amount I spend on beer / liquor will most appropriately go to that. It'll be easier on my stomach, for one... and perhaps a bit on my conscience, with a bit of empathy on the side.

I can't imagine what it's like to have to go through that, but I sincerely hope your quality of life improves. Don't know if I have my email listed, but you seem like a cool fellow Canuck. Props to you for being a stronger spirit than I likely could manage.

And then they didn't make nearly enough copies of Space Hulk available. I wanted to buy one, but I don't follow these things religiously, and only found out after all the preorders were gone. I guess that's what I get for being nonobsessive, and a student with out tons of money to buy one of the inflated copies after the fact.

Needless to say, it sucked, and they're being overzealous / ridiculous by attacking fansites and wanting them to remove all traces of dedication to a franchise that they no longer support. I would've never known about how great this game was if it wasn't for perusing BoardGameGeek in the first place!

If people are showing an interest in your product 15-20 years after it has been released, perhaps you should, oh, I don't know, revive it at for a few years! Why does it have to be this limited print run only bullshit -- I know, economics, and they can do whatever they want, but they would've made more money if they made more copies of the damn game! If not from the game itself, then from crossover sales (i.e. getting me interested in their overall product lines by proxy) it's not as if the preorder didn't sell out months in advance. Why not say, hey, these people want our game. Let's run a quadruple batch of this, put some in actual stores, see how it goes? I can't explain it.

I don't like that they're just sitting on it, but that's entirely their decision to make, and they won't get my money for it. I've never owned a product of theirs in my life, but I've heard such good things about Space Hulk I'd pay $80-100 for a mass produced, solid quality version. I think a fair number of other people would too. *shrugs* their loss.

I too, suffer from depression. I'm in a low cycle right now, and hopefully when the wheels of bureaucracy turn, I'll get the proper help this time. I think I'm starting to appreciate the extent to which it's affected me over the years -- hopefully a psychiatrist and proper treatment will help me understand and know how to deal with it so I can get on with life somehow.

You'd be surprised how jaded some medical professionals can get regarding mental illness. I understand why they get that way. It's no comfort whatsoever to someone who has ended up in the hospital due to panic attacks resulting in a possible loss of control which may well have ended in suicide.

In my current state of mind, I'm finding it so hard to do even the simplest things, so I'm mostly waiting on a proper diagnosis. Here's hoping it'll come sooner rather than later.
