You want more than personal experience? How else can you get a feel for true failure numbers? Do you really think that ANY manufacturer is going to give true failure rates? Insightful? Ya right.
Here's some numbers for you:
We have 500 customers. Of those I have sold 85 pc's using WD hd's(about 110 drives total) I have had 5 DOA, and 5 failures in the first year. I can live with that.
The remaining customers have various brands, Dell, HP, Compac, Gateway etc. Of those we have had 50
drive failures from all the major drive makers, however most of them are maxtor and seagates. These are 6 - 12 month failures btw.
So yes, without a doubt, consumer electronics have taken a turn to cheaper, less reliable equipment. This is what happens when consumers buy cheap and look for cheap items. You end up with shit quality and it becomes acceptable because no one wants to pay too much for anything.
