Comment I can't wait but I think your over estimating it. (Score 1) 817

This is great for computing, fresh ideas will help the market, but there are way too many Windows Apps that are just too central to business for this switch to happen overnight. Eventually, most all of the software world will be open source and you might get a lot of mainstream users playing with Chrome OS on their household PC's but again, until it's fully compatible with the top apps out there, or the open source world replaces those top apps with open source versions in the professional sector this revolution you guys are imagining will just be a pipe dream.

Comment How about a new language, designed for developers? (Score 1) 1077

How about an entirely new language that isn't based on any cultural values/religion/government/additude and is solely designed by and for designers and programmers? Otherwise yeah, just use English because I'm not going to bother learning any existing languages. I'm much more interested in a newer, better, modern language.

I use Google News through an RSS feed. The headlines I click on take me directly to the articles source website for viewing. That's gotta be good for any paper running off of ad revenue and they can all thank Google for it because honestly I'd never go to any one of their sites on an individual basis. Occasionally I use the RSS feed's main Google News link to go directly to Google News, so I can get a better overview of the days news, and from there I go directly to other sites if a story interests me. What are they complaining about? With the option to opt-out from Google I don't see any issue. If anything, I should find a way to be able to block or add certain providers news to Google's RSS as I choose.

Comment Apple has an OSX Monopoly. (Score 1) 858

If you shy away from bigger vendors, you can find very reliable, well built laptops in any spec range for cheap. The fact that Apple points the finger back at Dell/HP only goes to show that they want to hide the real issue here. And that is that when it comes to OSX machines, Apple is the only vendor, and they have a monopoly on the OSX platform.

1. Apple will not open up their business model to allow OSX (which is really the heart of Mac) to be installed on any configuration. This cuts out all OEM manufacturing. Apple loves this, it's their entire business model. Yet at the same time almost none of their hardware is actually proprietary.

2. If Mac allowed OEM vendors to build their own OSX based machines, Apple would become nothing more than an over-priced system builder/Ipod Maker.

3. That stability/compatibility noise I'm about to hear regarding locked off systems is partially correct, however it wouldn't stop Apple from releasing their own, perfectly configured, tested and certified machines for the OSX platform. And with that said, if you even think about bringing up Virus/Spyware arguments, remember that illegal Hackintosh builds don't get these problems either and they run the same hardware that Windows based machines do so you have no argument, it's really and only an issue of compatibility and driver stability, which honestly isn't an impossible feat.

4. Laptops, are expensive when compared to desktops no matter who you buy them from. And will continue to be expensive unless demand for custom builds, using just a case and monitor shell with modular components ever catches on. In the past this has been tried by the system builder industry but there wasn't enough demand and modular parts are still too big for laptops. With that said, you can still find cheaper vendors than HP/Dell/Apple/Gateway.

Comment I'm going to get flamed for this but.... (Score 1) 785

With the various "all you can eat" music services available, such as Napster, I don't see why anyone is complaining. If you can afford the luxury of buying music, it's cheaper now than it ever was before. $180 a year, for unlimited all you can possibly want music, at home and on your .mp3 player(s) I don't see how one has much room to complain. If you don't like this there are also various radio options, ranging from Pandora to Sirius|XM as well as free alternatives in the mix if your dead broke. CD's running $15 to $20+ a pop and even more for 2-disc/box sets IS a complete rip-off, and I can certainly understand that no one is going to pay those prices anymore, but honestly, $15 a month for absolutely unlimited music, with solid libraries to choose from, free internet radio options, and satelite radio alternatives, as well as garbage FM gives any consumer, or dirt broke down on your luck slob more than enough options to choose from. The only additional thing I can think of for the music industry to do for it's customers, is to lower the price of retail CD's and full purchased downloads, as well as continue to update the all you can eat libraries, with old and new music selections, and not raise prices on anything.
