But how does the child's doctor decide whether to schedule an emergency appendectomy to surgically remove a presumably inflamed appendix -- a procedure that carries its own risks like any surgery -- or wait and observe what could be a ticking time bomb that could rupture and kill the patient in a matter of hours?

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D2G_reactor, nuclear cruisers (since decommisioned) employed two nuclear reactors rated at 150 MW each. If all power was diverted to the railgun (which probably is not as practical as it seemed to be on Star Trek) this would mean that a 64 MJ gun would be fully charged in less than a quarter of a second. Obviously, then, bleeding off 1% (from a vessel designed to operate on only one reactor, so this is excessively conservative) would still allow for a recharge in less than a minute.
Power is not the limiting factor. How fast capacitors can safely charge and how quickly the gun can physically recuperate from firing is the issue.

Looking back, I distinctly remember my parents making every effort to provide a computer for me and my sibling, early on (they bought an Atari 400 for us when I was 5). Either by accident or on purpose, that single decision (and the continued follow up of purchasing newer computers as needed) shaped my future and the future of my siblings. I now have a daughter, and my wife and I have a number of years to before we worry about equipping her with technology (right now spending time with her and helping her be a happy well adjusted toddler are our primary concerns). In the spirit of my parents choice, what type of tools should parents be equipping their children with, today?"

Why Do Google Hit Numbers Vary? 378

Supa-Fly writes "I have a question about some conflicting results with the search engine google. I did a search for "pictures of mountains" and got exactly 1 million results. My friend did the same search (from the same office)and got 1,010,000 results. A second friend did the same search as the last 2 and got 1,020,000. These have not changed and every person gets the same results each time. My question is what is up with the discrepancies on google's search results?" Since this question is hard to answer from the outside, Craig Silverstein of Google kindly supplies his best answer to this question, below.
