Submission + - Google To Pay $155 Million In Settlements Over Location Tracking (reuters.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Google agreed to pay $155 million to settle claims by California and private plaintiffs that the search engine company misled consumers about how it tracks their locations, and used their data without consent. Both settlements resolve claims that the Alphabet unit deceived people into believing they maintained control over how Google collected and used their personal data. The company was accused of being able to "profile" people and target them with advertising even if they turned off their "Location History" setting, and deceive people about their ability to block ads they did not want.

The California settlement requires Google to pay $93 million, and disclose more about how it tracks people's whereabouts and uses data it collects. Money from Google's $62 million settlement with private plaintiffs would, after deducting legal fees, go to court-approved nonprofit groups that track internet privacy concerns. Lawyers for the plaintiffs said this made sense because it was "infeasible" to distribute money to the approximately 247.7 million U.S. adults with mobile devices.

The only issue here is people Frooping it up for the rest of us gun owners. If you want to own a gun. Get a gun! They aren't expensive. If your a hobbyist and you want to buy a gun kit good on you! If the thought ever crosses your mind "I want to buy or build this thing because it gets around a regulation" YOU are the problem. Pistol Gun braces, while originally designed to help the handicapped have been perverted into a Item for tax avoidance. You want a Short Barrel Rifle, Go buy one! You just need to add the $200.00 Tax and fill out the forms and away you go! But you use a Pistol brace on your "Pistol" which is effectively a rifle but with out a Stock. Well you get to avoid the tax but you end up with a inferior rifle. The ONLY reason for healthy people to use them is tax avoidance. You want to build a gun in your home machine shop? That's perfectly legal. All this rule states is you need to put a serial number on it. You already had to do that if you wanted to sell it. You want to have a gun to evade, background checks, reporting requirements, restrictions set upon you because your a convicted felon or you have a restraining order against you, and again taxes? Well you are the Issue! When you set out to make or purchase items specifically designed to evade the spirit of the law YOU are the problem. Even if you are have no intention to commit "Real Crimes" you are avoiding the law, and supporting a ecosystem for avoiding the law. All this does is give gun owners a bad name, It gives people who want increased gun control Ammunition "See.. they evade the spirit of the law, they have no intention of actually obeying anything and can't be trusted. I've owned guns literally every day if my life (My grandfather gave me a 22 Riffle on the day I was born, to my mothers annoyance) I'm tired of people going "I don't like this law so Instead of obeying and trying to get the law changed, they find the screwiest way they can get around the letter of the law but clearly violate the spirit. It has never occurred to me in my day to day life that I needed to avoid the law like this, and then the rules change to make things more difficult for people like me because a small number of folks can't get their heads out of their behinds and NOT AVOID THE LAW. it's really simple. It's not hard. Don't evade your taxes, don't buy things that are transparently designed to evade existing regulation. I.e bump stocks and pistol braces. Because you avoid the law you give the folks interested in more regulation more reason to regulate and you prove you can't be trusted. So why should you be listened to? If your thought process ever encompasses the words "I want to avoid this law" STOP. That is the warning sign that you are screwing up.

It was cool watching the robot arms move back and forth at frightening speed. Oh don't forget the Dot Matrix printers that spit out green-bar reports so fast that they had thick metal plates to catch the paper and stacked it. Then there was the Chicago Board of Trade. Submission + - Half Life Alyx Hits PC VR Headsets In March 2020 (arstechnica.com)

An anonymous reader writes: After a tease earlier this week, Valve has revealed more details and a new trailer for the first new Half-Life content in over a decade. The "full-length" Half Life: Alyx will hit Steam in March 2020, Valve says, with support for "all PC-based VR headsets." Pre-orders are already available for $59.99, though the game will be free if you own a Valve Index headset. The game, which Valve says is "set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2," has been "designed from the ground up for Virtual Reality" (i.e. you can stop hoping for a 2D monitor release). "Everyone at Valve is excited to be returning to the world of Half-Life," Valve founder Gabe Newell said in a statement. “VR has energized us."

Today's video trailer shows that next year's Alyx-ization of Half-Life is equal parts abstract and concrete. The VR perspective from today's trailer doesn't include any floating body parts or feet; the only part of your virtual self you'll see, at least in today's trailer, is your hands, covered in a pair of gloves. Yet we also hear Alyx's voice, which indicates that this game's protagonist won't be nearly as silent as Freeman in his own mainline adventures. Today's announcement includes video footage that confirms a data-leak examination by Valve News Network earlier this year: a new manipulation system dubbed the Gravity Gloves. And boy do these things look cool. Need to grab or pick something up? Point at whatever that object is (whether it's close or far away) with an open hand until it glows orange, then close your hand and flick your wrist toward yourself to fling the item in your direction. At this point, you get a moment to physically "catch" the object in question. Point, clench, flick, catch.

Today’s trailer also confirms bits and pieces of the exciting HLA details I’ve previously heard about from multiple sources. For instance, the trailer includes teases of the game’s approach to VR-exclusive puzzles, particularly those that require moving hands around a three-dimensional space. Some of these puzzles will require scanning and finding clues hidden inside of the virtual world’s walls (and moving or knocking down anything hindering your ability to see or touch said walls). Other puzzles will require arranging what look like constellations or grids of stars around a 3D space in order to match certain patterns. And then there’s the matter of familiar Half-Life creatures coming to life for the first time in over 12 years, which means they’re that much more detailed and gruesome as rendered in the Source 2 engine.

I think the difference here is that The Ukraine Whistle-blower is protected by "Whistle-blower protection Laws" they did everything correctly and the government being bound by those laws is supposed to keep the name secret. This is to encourage whistle-blowers in the future. Outing the whistle-blower is an attempt to punish the behavior. By Law members of the Government should not be revealing the whistle-blowers name as it will have professional and personal consequences that can be quite sever. As a individual you are not bound by these laws and may discuss him/her to your harts content. However by discussing the individual you are working to prevent such whistle blowing in future. If you wish to have your political opponents subject to whistle-blowers when they act corruptly then you should act to protect those who expose your political allies as well.

Mostly by attrition and changes to the overall game system that makes them unattractive to play.

Console Port of The Witcher On Hold 23

Several sources are reporting that work on The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf, a console port of the popular PC game, has officially been suspended. CD Projekt, makers of the original game, were working with WideScreen Games on the new version. WideScreen says that CD Projekt missed a significant payment for their role in the development, leading them to stop work on the game. They are emphatic that development won't continue until CD Projekt makes good on the debt, but CD Projekt says, "All payments were done on time according to milestone plan. ... Truth is that payments were later than originally planned but this was solely due to delays in production. The delays were growing in the project due to WSG [continuing] to miss the deadlines." The game's future is uncertain.
