Progress is inevitable. Your feelings on the matter cannot halt the advance of this technology. Throughout history (and in the present as well) governments, churches, and other vast entities have done their best to restrain technologies deemed dangerous. Those attempts failed. They may have put it off for awhile (the church vs. Galileo) but they didn't stop it. Now, this is not to say that nothing can be done about new technologies. We as a race are capable of manipulating the flow of tech. We can put resources towards developing it, or point it in a direction, or discourage growth in a certain direction. In this way we have limited control over how tech. will develop.

I've actually been taking their intro level programming class. http://academicearth.org/courses/introduction-to-computer-science-and-programming I have tried to learn programming a few times before through sites like cprogramming.com, but there's just so much jargon to wade through. This course has made it much easier to grasp some of the fundamentals. I will say though, it isn't perfect. If I get stuck on a problem and Google can't help I have to post to a forum and wait for a few days, trading information back and forth with someone who knows what they're doing. Also, there's no answer key for assignments.

There are plenty of 18-20 year olds who can and would do it better, as there are plenty who wouldn't. It's not a 1 in 20. Not everyone will throw it all away for a shiny car, a beautiful face, and a quick high. Yes, there are many who would, but not as many as you seem to think. But you seem hell bent on ripping it all up just because you think you know better." 2.) You seem to think you have built up quite the "foundation" for the young to start from. Look at the world around you. It ain't perfect by any definition. What exactly qualifies as making a good foundation to you? I get to come into a world stuck in a global depression with a completely unreasonable government and filled with amoral people. Maybe you're misinterpreting "ripping it all up" for trying to fix some of your mistakes.

I'm sorry if it seems a bit off topic, but how can you blame Obama for your lack of job (see sig)? He was handed this scenario by us and our former presidents, he hasn't had time to do much of anything. Of course, what he has done hasn't impressed me very much, but still blaming him for a problem that had been building up for so long is just stupid. In fact, it's this thinking that is encouraging his bad actions. If he didn't need to worry so much about what people thought of him short term then he probably wouldn't have tried to duct tape the economy for re-election. People blame the current situation on the current president. True, he has some power to affect the present situation but the long term consequences are unseen.

From an open minded view gays and lesbians are exactly like other people in mind. But the public rarely has an open mind. Most people do not enjoy hearing about whether you're gay or straight, it's like telling someone who doesn't want to know about what you did with that cute girl from the bar. When I say gay you think screwed up mentally or weird. It's also a common insult in high school. The strict definition, however, is "of, indicating, or supporting homosexual interests or issues." So yes, I would prefer if you wouldn't tell me about it. Please keep it to yourself. It's fine if you happen to mention your homosexual wife/husband but rubbing it in my face just pisses me off.

First I would like to state I am not an expert at Linux, nor have I even had the chance to use it so my opinions are completely based upon the things I've read at Slashdot and this article. Now that I got that out of the way I would like to point out the + and the - from my view. -:The article argues that Linux offers more in versatility. To me that translates into more places for problems that IT (who has probably used Linux a bit more than I have but still is unused to it)has to deal with. -: Everyone upstairs will not have the same patience as they would not during a recession. But perhaps this is a mixed curse per say, because people change more often under pressure. +: Exponential rate. The companies that switch will lure even more to switch. The recession only emphasizes that effect. +: Cheaper than other alternatives and their upgrades (windows).
