I'd have to check for Illinois, but the Michigan SOS office has sample ballots online (for your specific district, you enter in your name, birth date, and zip and it'll show you where you're registered and give you a sample ballot)... I'd assume the same is available to you.

Handling Caller ID Spoofing? 556

An anonymous reader writes "A nice little old lady I know has had her number spoofed by some car warranty scammers. They're calling hundreds of potential victims per day pretending to use her phone number, and the angry ones call her back; some of them have even left death threats. She's terrified. Some well-intending anti-telemarketing folks have posted her address on the 'net as well. How can we figure out where these scammer bastards are, and what's the state of the current legislation to prevent caller ID spoofing? I called the FBI in Boston (near where she lives) and they said they can't help. She's called her phone company, but they said they can't help either. She's had the same number for over 50 years and doesn't want to change it." If the Feds can't or won't handle it, what's the best approach here?
It's funny. Laugh.

Uwe Boll To Quit Making Movies With 1M Signatures 355

An anonymous reader writes to mention that Uwe Boll, the infamous German director behind such video game adaptations as House of the Dead, BloodRayne, Dungeon Siege and Postal, has recently admitted that he would retire from making movies if enough people want him to stop. When FearNet mentioned to Boll a petition online signed by 18,000 people requesting that he cease making films, Boll responded that '18,000 is not enough to convince me.' So how much would be enough? 'One million,' Boll said."

Posting Publicly Available URL Claimed a "Hack" 555

Urban Strata writes "Popular mobile phone community HowardForums.com is being hit with take-down notices from MobiTV. At issue is the fact that a HowardForums community member uncovered a publicly accessible URL for MobiTV's television stream. This URL is not encrypted or authenticated in any way, and yet MobiTV sent site owner Howard Chui a cease-and-desist letter for hosting a forum with the public URL, claiming that doing so is equivalent to hacking their service."

Vinyl Gets Its Groove Back 751

theodp writes "Time reports that vinyl records are suddenly cool again. Vinyl has a warmer, more nuanced sound than CDs or MP3s; records feature large album covers with imaginative graphics, pullout photos, and liner notes. 'Bad sound on an iPod has had an impact on a lot of people going back to vinyl,' says 15-year-old David MacRunnel, who owns more than 1,000 records."

Journal Journal: Going back to school for entry-level tech jobs? 1

My boyfriend has a B.A. in Communications Media from a middle-of-the-road midwestern university. Now he's going back to the same university to get a Computer Science degree...so that he can apply for entry level BSD sysadmin jobs (preferably in Canada, if he can find them.) My question, as I'm not really a tech-sector person myself, is whether or not those of you in the profession think such a course of action is worth it? Considering he's working full-time (in a media job), he only has time to
