There is a solution already done that is exactly what you are looking for, but it may be a higher cost than you are expecting. The company where I work, Intermec, makes wireless networking products for manufacturers and warehouses primarily. We have a product known as the Universal Access Point that was designed and tested for extreme environments. These access points can now use Lucent 802.11 radios.
