Microsoft had a version of UNIX many years ago that was only available to developers, and Hotmail ran on Linux, if I remember correctly.

The problem with like or any button is it does not improve ones relationships, it distances people. Comments get closer, but social media being impersonal, and easy like buttons, there is no true emotional investment and removes one from others. I can't remember the last time I was called or I have called anyone on the phone just to chat. Nothing is new because everything is superficially placed in soundbytes amongst the kitten and baby pics. If someone needs empathy, maybe they need a call, or non-virtual hug.

Is it cost effective to actually build your own car?

I work in an IT dept supporting end-users of all types. We have 40 different models we support with some a vintage age 8 years that are running just fine. Surfaces, although, have taken the PHBs by storm. They have constituted more RMAs, support issues, causes for reimaging, and general nuisances for all IT more than all other devices combined in 15 years, even though the constitute less than 1 percent of the fleet in the last 2 years.

Real life, still.

LOL. worried about being considered nerdy on slashdot. That is like a fish worrying about being wet.

This is why I buy cars made before 1993.

So we now have analog security holes and exploits to worry about. Makes you wonder if all the security holes in programs and operating systems have been there all along as a backdoor for governments and corporations.

I can't tell you how many times my backup tapes come back from cold storage unreadable....

Just look at all the ways that big tech companies partner with the very governments we are supposed to be protected from. Google especially looks like a branch of DARPA.

I was invited over for dinner alot to homes of fellow students, and during the dinner, "Saaaayy, you know something about computers... Can you take a look at my computer?" I knew that was the only reason I was every invited, but I was not proud, but rather hungry. After thinking back on those experiences, I would not have the career I have now without having done all that work for free.
