Comment What technology was used? (Score 1) 227

What technology is used for ballistic missile alerts? I guess this one was via the Wireless Emergency Alerts network but what was the over-the-air protocol used?
The obvious one is the ancient GSM SMS Cell Broadcast standard but do Hawaii networks support this (and its descendants) and do all/most mobiles? Which mobile phone models received it? And which did not? What proportion of users in Hawaii saw this?

Comment On the other hand.... (Score 1) 161

Once you CAN build a robot which can do these things then its not far off being able to do the laundry "by hand". So maybe you don't need a washing machine any more? And maybe you don't need a dishwasher, or a vacuum cleaner. In other words, if you have a robot which can do what poor old "slavey" did in middle class households in Victorian times then a lot of domestic appliances become unnecessary. And the robot doesn't need to be anything like as dexterous as a human since it has faster processing (so can compensate for mechanical inadequacies) and it can work more slowly than a human (it doesn't have better things to do than washing your underwear)
Come on all your robot engineering geniuses - build us a general purpose domestic robot!
And aim for a price equivalent to a small car and, eventually, equivalent to all those domestic appliances it replaces.

Comment Computer console speakers (Score 1) 790

When I worked at Hawker Siddeley in 1968-69 the Elliot 4130 we used had mag tape storage (no discs) and if you set it to find something on a tape it would sometimes make noises like baroque music from the console speaker. I think speakers like this date back almost to Von Neumann and Flowers in the 1940s. The last I heard was an IBM 360/50 in the mid 70s. So at least 30 years.

Comment Who does this & how do we find out? (Score 1) 206

I am not a HTTP expert. My protocols are so old you probably won't know them!
- How do I determine if my ISP is doing this? Will Firebug do the job or do I need a protocol sniffer?
- How can we determine which ISPs are doing this?
- How can I challenge my own or possible future ISPs?
It strikes me that the first step is to document this. Will some kind (and expert) soul do this? Perhaps a Wikipedia page? If you don't grok Wikipedia then I (and may others, I am sure) can do the formatting if we have the information - with references.

Comment Faster-than-light travel is rubbish (Score 1) 141

I yield to nobody in my admiration of the intellectual leadership of Freeman Dyson but pontifications like "Faster-than-light travel is rubbish" are asking for trouble. I'm reminded of a valuable precept - "When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong." Clarke was only an engineer turned writer of course, but we do have geostationary satellites and we haven't yet found Dyson spheres.
