The term, 'brilliant jerk,' is just absurd to me. You want to complement an asshole before you call them a jerk? Not to mention the term sounds childish to begin with.

It's called a superiority complex and very intelligent/competent people are sometimes afflicted with one. Einstein was, 'brilliant'; your neighbor who doesn't pick up her dog's shit, is a jerk. The person who steals your parking space is a jerk. Your boss, who is unable to give praise, and often times sees fit verbally harass or to personally insult people for their mistakes, probably has a superiority complex with a varying degree of malignancy.

Despite the hype; Elon Musk is not a genius. Having an electric car double as a miniature power plant is actually an obvious; but, genius idea. ANY electric car that does NOT allow you to use it's batteries as a form of powering as many things as possible including a home, is the definition of obtuse. A 40Kwh battery, in your car, being used to power a home that is using 2Kilowatt hours will be able to power said home for 20 full hours; and that's not including if some one has solar cells to recharge it. I will concede that Nissan is under the assumption they can compete on any level with the, 'persona', of Musk; they can not. Musk is uniquely focused on the problems the future poses to his idea of how things should be; possibly just for himself. So, no, Nissan won't be competing with Musk's personality any time soon; but, if they can put out a car, that doubles as a miniature powerplant before he does, it's just further proof of what I already know to be true. Musk is a showman, not a genius. Steve Jobs was not a genius either and neither was Bill Gates or Mark Suckerburg or Sergey Brinn or any of these dudes. I can imagine a simple situation where a house is off-grid, powered by solar, and stores it's excess electricity in the car battery that the car uses; they would have 2 car batteries, one in the house and one in the car, and either of those batteries can be a backup for the home, or for the car; you could also allow them to be able to link up in series to any amount and be used in any situations that would require such a thing. Simple, effective, and so on...

I'm not saying them proposing their idea to be a better alternative to Musk's solution is true; but, perhaps could be. If the grid can't supply your home at any particular moment your car is also plugged into your home, I don't see why it wouldn't be able to do the job the grid was doing till the grid is back online. Musk's, 'super big battery' is not a genius idea... It's just that nobody is else doing what he's doing and that's just a part of his persona. Most of that probably has to do with the entrenched nature of corporations in general; all management and no ingenuity, risk taking, gambling, and flying by the seat of your pants. He's willing to gamble and take tasks; and that can be useful; but, it's not genius, it's not new; it's a business tactic; and it's a tactic more suited to a lone wolf than a board of directors. I'm not a fan of Musk; or, I at least will never give him the pleasure of my consideration of him as a genius, not that he needs it. Having an electric car double as a power source for anything IS a genius idea; simple, effective, and obvious... and it seems so obvious it's the type of thing that makes you think, "why didn't I think of that?" "How did I not notice that?" Just my opinions, anyway....

Your friend knew he was wrong and tried to justify it with his own state of financial misfortune. Plain and simple. I've met homeless people who will harass you for a bite to eat. I've also met homeless people who were more willing to help ME out in my distress, despite their unfortunate circumstances. Assholes are assholes. Some of them are rich, some of them are poor, some of them are homeless, and some of them are in jail/prison. There's also good people in all of those places too.

We should bring back Denisovan and Neanderthal and any lost branches of Homo Sapiens. I think that would be just swell. I've always theorized that some of the Neanderthal and Homo Sapiens hybrids got the best of both worlds. Neanderthal, quite likely had a larger ocipital lobe, which may have lended to better visual/spatial memory and reasoning. Whereas, Homo Sapiens likely evolved higher forms of communication which allowed for greater collaboration. Mix those two together and take the cream of the crop and you've got great party guests who can reason out the curvature of space time.

If this guy did actually invent bitcoin; I think that speaks a lot to bitcoin. My grandfather claimed to have invent the game, "Battleship." He didn't go around suing people who didn't believe him. Furthermore he didn't make a big fuss about. It was always kind of funny because, even as his family, we were never sure if he invented the game; but, his story was simple and his claim was simple and he really had no reason to lie to anyone. Anyway. I don't think whoever invented bitcoin would have wanted any attention; especially if they had amassed a small fortune. Another good example is, Steve Wozniak. Steve Wozniak can lay a decent claim to the invention of the personal computer; and, he's a humble guy. If you invented bitcoin... Would you rather be some prick suing people who didn't believe you; or, would you rather be sipping a gin and tonic on the beach reading about some idiot who claims to have invented this, 'thing', that has a life of it's own, that you largely and or largely helped create? I'd take the latter route.

However, they don't give you freedom. Microsoft and Apple can not give you the freedoms inherit to free software. Technically, maybe they could. They could release the entire source code of all their software as GPL V3. Are they going to do that, though? No. Instead they are trying to exert control and influence in as many areas of the open source community as they can. Each and every time they win a battle and gain control; then, they can start to use that control to extract profits. Free software gives you freedom. Microsoft and apple take freedom away from you. Youtube, Google, and Facebook make perfectly clear in their terms of service that they will bend you over and psychologically profile you while doing it, so they can sell you to the highest bidder.
