Despite the hype; Elon Musk is not a genius. Having an electric car double as a miniature power plant is actually an obvious; but, genius idea. ANY electric car that does NOT allow you to use it's batteries as a form of powering as many things as possible including a home, is the definition of obtuse. A 40Kwh battery, in your car, being used to power a home that is using 2Kilowatt hours will be able to power said home for 20 full hours; and that's not including if some one has solar cells to recharge it. I will concede that Nissan is under the assumption they can compete on any level with the, 'persona', of Musk; they can not. Musk is uniquely focused on the problems the future poses to his idea of how things should be; possibly just for himself. So, no, Nissan won't be competing with Musk's personality any time soon; but, if they can put out a car, that doubles as a miniature powerplant before he does, it's just further proof of what I already know to be true. Musk is a showman, not a genius. Steve Jobs was not a genius either and neither was Bill Gates or Mark Suckerburg or Sergey Brinn or any of these dudes. I can imagine a simple situation where a house is off-grid, powered by solar, and stores it's excess electricity in the car battery that the car uses; they would have 2 car batteries, one in the house and one in the car, and either of those batteries can be a backup for the home, or for the car; you could also allow them to be able to link up in series to any amount and be used in any situations that would require such a thing. Simple, effective, and so on...
I'm not saying them proposing their idea to be a better alternative to Musk's solution is true; but, perhaps could be. If the grid can't supply your home at any particular moment your car is also plugged into your home, I don't see why it wouldn't be able to do the job the grid was doing till the grid is back online. Musk's, 'super big battery' is not a genius idea... It's just that nobody is else doing what he's doing and that's just a part of his persona. Most of that probably has to do with the entrenched nature of corporations in general; all management and no ingenuity, risk taking, gambling, and flying by the seat of your pants. He's willing to gamble and take tasks; and that can be useful; but, it's not genius, it's not new; it's a business tactic; and it's a tactic more suited to a lone wolf than a board of directors. I'm not a fan of Musk; or, I at least will never give him the pleasure of my consideration of him as a genius, not that he needs it. Having an electric car double as a power source for anything IS a genius idea; simple, effective, and obvious... and it seems so obvious it's the type of thing that makes you think, "why didn't I think of that?" "How did I not notice that?" Just my opinions, anyway....
