Exactly why does a private company owe you anything if there was no contract between you and it? I think people use so many privately owned services on a daily basis that they start to blur the line between private and government entities. Services like Reddit,Facebook, etc have no legal obligation to allow you any access to their services. Your country may have some legal mechanisms in place that allow you to request data they host about you; however, that is not the same as needing to allow you on their platform.

Even if they had an offline backup, if you never test/practice your restore process the backup can still be useless. Disater mitigation is serious business and now that a lot of companies don't host their stuff in-house it seems to have taken a back seat to cost reductions.

Is it really no ask? Or do people forget they have the option to not auto-install drivers from M$? Just like about everything else involving technology, people are throwing caution to the wind in the name on convenience.

There are plenty of reasons why staying on-prem may be required. Handling sensitive information being the main one. You have zero guarentees of what hands are in the cookie pot with the current legal landscape when you don't host your own data. Cloud Act/FISA court orders/etc. Sure it may be conaidered paranoia to a certain extent; however history has shown that there are levels of monitoring happening every day that we are just not aware of.

If your version of outlook allows it, try pointing your server address to your OWA (outlook web access) URL instead of your actual exchange server. Not the prettiest work around but normally will at least pull everything you can see via OWA (when pulling from exchange leaves a bunch missing).

I feel lile disabling notifications all together should be step 1 for everyone. Instant gratification is hard to overcome but not constantly being alwrted and only checking things when you feel like doing so is a step in the rigth direction. Sure you can still leave them on for timers and calendar events, maybe sms; however, the more you fee obliged to respond rigth away the more it seems to re-enforce instant gratification.

I have been living without a sim card for like 7 years now, it's doable but many services still require sms for 2FA. Slowly they are adopting the ability to use software tokens but there are still services that don't.

Not in my back yard seems to be common response. I belive it to be somewhat valid. I have yet to see a community talk about how it has improved their quality of life and/or property values.
In my opinion, the best approach would be for interested countries to invest heavily into one or two major locations to host several data centers. Small modular reactors, hydro electric, geothermal, etc should be built near these sites to provide their power needs and major telecom upgrades/new lines should be built to provide them with the required power and connectivity needs. Sadly every one wants the milk and butter but no one wants to raise the cow.

Not to say that it's not a net negative to these communities; however, they do require infrastructure upgrades in most cases. For the average household I'd say maybe getting access to fiber if it wasn't allready available in the community.

Should this not have been noticed in firewall logs a long time ago? Like if your default config was ssl enabled wouldn't you have noticed way too much port 110 activity being blocked? The article does mention this seems to only be affecting certain user with certain configurations, but I feel like this is behaviour that would have been noticed a long time ago if it was wide spread. Not saying something isn't fishy, just saying someone somewhere should have noticed this a long time ago if it was actually a 20 year old bug.
I'd honestly love to see a much more technical analisys of this issue to determine the root cause. Is it an outlook issue or an specific OS version issue, can we re-create the problem in a lab. Interesting find never the less.

Support contracts generate more revenue then the physical hardware in a lot of these server sales I'm assuming. Support with decent SLAs (service level agrerments) is not cheap at all.

I don't think experience has anything to do with it, hear me out. If you had 30 years experience in programming then why not just code the program yourself? You are not owed any kind of support or even documentation from an open source project, just be happy they released their work as open source. You can look at the source code and fix anything broken and/or even write your own documentation about it and share it with others if you find the project needs better documentation. Get involved with the project if you want to see it succeed. IDK, a whole lot of people seem to think they are owed something from the developpers when in fact the only thing we owe them is thanks and gratitude for having released it as open source.

I really don't think that is the case at all. What I find to be the case is that new users hate hearing the answer RTFM, and honestly please do RTFM because the man pages or online docs most likely have all the info you need. RTFM = read the fucking manual
