The text doesn't suggest any such thing. Facial expressions happen to produce a lot of neural activity, which make them easy to pick up - a lot easier than most thoughts by themselves. Expressions thus make a natural focus of such an early instrument. Sensors on your face would kind of ruin the point.

Submission + - Genetically Modification produces Super Mouse (bbc.co.uk) 1

Identity Missing writes: An Ohio laboratory has produced genetically modified mice which "can run five to six kilometres at a speed of 20 meters per minute on a treadmill, for up to six hours before stopping," as well as a number of other remarkable feats. An enzyme called phosphoenolypyruvate carboxykinases (PEPCK-C) is apparently responsible, and we should hope that the scientists are correct in saying that athletes won't be modifying their genes any time soon to get it, because it apparently makes the mice more aggressive. If anyone feels a super villain coming on, at least we can rely on these Mighty Mice. A video demonstrates just how much these little guys beat the competition.

Submission + - Nova Scotia to build Space Tourist Launchpad

Identity Missing writes: Lockheed Martin is planning on building a commercial spaceport in, of all places, Nova Scotia Canada. The details are a bit shaky, but apparently the project is serious enough to attract 45 million dollars from the Federal government. The launch pad will specifically be built in Cape Breton, a mostly rural island characterized by low employment, thick colloquial accents, and kitchen fiddle parties. A PDF is available with pictures and a description of the planned orbital glider, the "Silver Dart," somewhat lacking the aesthetics of the X Prize winner.

Submission + - Nanotube Body Armour Coming Soon (bbc.co.uk)

s31523 writes: "Military and law enforcement agencies are constantly seeking better protection in the line of fire, but current armour is heavy and bulky. The University of Cambridge has developed a new type of carbon fibre made up of nanotubes that is some cases exceed the performance of Kevlar. The new material has other potential uses as well, from bomb disposal bins to flexible solar panels."
