Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 — Gaming On Six Panels 111

MojoKid writes "AMD's 6-output Radeon has been seen in action at a number of events, but today the ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition is being officially launched. HotHardware paired the card up with six 22" Dell LCD panels in a 3x2 configuration — with a max resolution of 5760x2160 — and ran it through a number of popular titles including Dirt 2, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and Crysis. For specialized, high-end graphics cards like this, the market potential may be relatively small. If, however, the idea of multi-monitor gaming is appealing to you and you've got the means to score one of these cards (along with multiple displays), you won't be disappointed." Reader Vigile adds a different analysis of the card's six-monitor gaming: "PC Perspective found FPS games were basically unplayable because of the bezel through the middle of their vision while RTS and racing games like StarCraft 2 and DiRT 2 were spectacular."

Seems like the average joe/jane only believes in contracts when they get ALL the benefits with no downside. Don't get me wrong, I think there needs to be some more checks and balances with the carriers, but a contract is a contract. If you don't agree to it, don't sign it. If you don't care to read and understand it (or can't understand it - find help!) that's your own damn fault! Only in the USA can we blame everyone else for our own problems.

My mortgage...how was I supposed to know that I can't afford to live next to a wealthy CEO even though I have an entry level job. Must be the someone else fault I got myself into that situation without even giving it a rational thought!

BS! Most Grandma's don't have a clue what a GB is and I'd go further to say most don't even have internet. It is true they would pay more per bit, but overall I think they should pay less.

The fixed cost argument is also BS. Look at water, electricity, gas, etc. Have a similar breakdown and use metered billing. This would give the providers the incentive to have faster speeds so that those who actually use the darn thing could generate more income.

The Flying Giant Is 40 Years Old 366

Ponca City, We love you writes "Four decades ago, Boeing's prototype 747 took to the skies over Washington State for a 75-minute flight that helped bring cheap airline travel to millions of people and would remain the world's largest commercial aircraft for 37 years until the advent of the double-decker Airbus A380. What made the 747 unique was that it was the first 'wide body' aircraft with more than one aisle — a big step towards reducing the sense of traveling in a narrow tube, and inducing a sense more equivalent to flying in a large room with high ceilings. But back in the 1960s, convincing people that the 747 would fly was a tough call. Joe Sutter, the director of engineering on the project, even spent an hour with Charles Lindbergh, going over all the data to prove that the jumbo would not flip over or become unstable at high speeds. Boeing has sold more than 1,400 jumbos in the past four decades, worth, at today's prices, more than $350 billion and although we might complain of traveling in 'cattle class' we have the 747 to thank for being able to do so at affordable prices."

The Presidential Portrait Goes Digital 295

alphadogg writes "Barack Obama's election to US president has already brought a string of firsts, and on Wednesday there came another. The official presidential portrait was shot on a digital camera for the first time. The picture was taken by the White House's new official photographer, Pete Souza, and issued by The Office of the President Elect through its Web site. It was taken on Tuesday evening at 5:38 p.m. using a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, according to the metadata embedded in the image file."

Why would we expect an industry that competes to point where they set prices that cause them to lose money would adopt policies and procedures that are in the best interest of the majority? My feeling is that a couple high paying business people would be willing to pay extra for the right. One airline would adopt and the rest would try to follow. According to the CNBC show on American Airlines, some flights are profitable by a few hundred dollars. One less passenger and it is a loss. Charging for cell phones would probably have a significant impact on their bottom line....
