Political Affiliation Can Be Differentiated By Appearance 262

quaith writes "It's not the way they dress, but the appearance of their face. A study published in PLoS One by Nicholas O. Rule and Nalini Ambady of Tufts University used closely cropped greyscale photos of people's faces, standardized for size. Undergrads were asked to categorize each person as either a Democrat or Republican. In the first study, students were able to differentiate Republican from Democrat senate candidates. In the second, students were able to differentiate the political affiliation of other college students. Accuracy in both studies was about 60% — not perfect, but way better than chance."

Swedish Anti-Piracy Lawyer Gets New Name 'Pirate' 178

An anonymous reader writes "Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet (in Swedish) reports that Henrik Pontén, a lawyer of Antipiratbyrån, a Swedish organization against file sharing, has received a notification from officials that an application for change of his name has been approved and a new first name 'Pirate' has been added to his name. Authorities do not check the identity of persons applying for name changes. Pirate Pontén now has to apply for another change in order to revert the change."

In Sweden we have a semi-public infrasound network that could detect civilian supersonic flights across the atlantic. It is used for nuclear weapons controll. Since several of the sources is public (but not those under control of the UN), media should be able to pinpoint any peculiar large explosions at that relevant time. I'm not entirely sure of the range, but the system can detect and pin-point Russian SSBM launches. The relevant link is http://www.umea.irf.se/. During the first North Korean nuclear crisis Swedish intelligence quickly knew what was going on. The instrument used for finding trace isotopes in the air was also Swedish. I have some memory of a really useful but delayed data source from this network. With it you could "hear" the workshifts in mines, accelerations from Concorde aircrafts etc. But I don't remember the link. Does anyone remember it?
