When I was young, if you wanted a software engineering degree versus a programming degree, you had to be half electrical engineer with a programming curriculum that consisted of low-level programming in Assembler and C. Nowadays, anybody can be a "software engineer", be it a person that has a traditional computer science degree or a self-taught coder.
