That winged complexity was required to return heavy payloads to Earth. You wont see Dragon returning broken satellites to earth or carrying spacelab for science missions.

Because contrary to claims, design isnâ(TM)t the biggest expense for these rovers. And you canâ(TM)t load 5 of them on an Atlas rocket and send them on their way. One of these rovers are close to the limit that an Atlas can get to Mars. And if you think spacex is going to save you money, think again. The Spacex BFR canâ(TM)t carry as much payload as an Atlas 541 in itâ(TM)s reusable configuration. The only way spacex is getting even a single rover to mars is with an expendable bfr.

Pioneer 10 didnt travel so far that we couldnt detect its radio signal anymore. Its RTG power output fell to the point that the radio had to be turned off. That isnt the same thing.

It makes sense if you start using wind/solar to crack water - assuming all this hardware and hydrogen storage is cheaper than batteries.
