Comment Re:Being a mathematics undergraduate... (Score 1) 680

Being a chemical engineering undergraduate I started to enjoy mathematics more and more when I went to university. In highschool you were given a set of theorems and assignments. With these assignments you could practice those theorems. Now at university, lectures are used to prove theorems and I have to say, I absolutely love it. From the derivation of the integral to the hydrodynamic profile of a laminar fluidum: They're not a bunch of characters scrapped together, they're elegant relations fit together in one single formula. But you can't see this beauty if you have not seen the prove. Maybe theorems just need to be proven and derived at highschool in order to show the real beauty of mathematics.

Thin Oxygen-CO2 Atmosphere Discovered On Rhea 37

Randyll writes "During its Saturn flyby in March, the Cassini space probe detected an oxygen-rich atmosphere on Rhea, Saturn's second-largest moon. While 100 times thinner than the atmospheres of Europa or Ganymede, Rhea's atmosphere contains a surprising amount of carbon dioxide. There is an explanation for the oxygen — the decomposition of surface ice — while the origin of the carbon dioxide is a mystery. A few of the possible explanations are that Rhea has carbon-rich organic molecules or that the gas is seeping from Rhea's interior. However, researchers have been unable to determine the exact source for the gas." While "richness" is relative — the study's abstract refers to Rhea's atmosphere as "tenuous," and oxygen concentrations are trillions of times lower there than they are on Earth — the finding still puts Rhea in rare company among the planets and moons of the solar system.

Atari Founder Proclaims the End of Gaming Piracy 831

OMGZombies writes "Speaking on a conference held yesterday in New York, the Atari founder Nolan Bushnell said that a new stealth encryption chip called TPM will 'absolutely stop piracy of gameplay'. The chip is apparently being embedded on most of the new computer motherboards and is said to be 'uncrackable by people on the internet and by giving away passwords' though it won't stop movie or music piracy, since 'if you can watch it and you can hear it, you can copy it.'"
