Comment Scientology isn't a religion (Score 2) 566
Hubbard insisted that his "clinic" (Scientology) only be called a "religion" for tax-exemption status and protection against practicing medicine without a liscence. At the time this was done, Scientologists thought it was a clever joke, and laughed every time someone had to put on a "clerical collar" to show the IRS. They even set aside an empty closet at every franchise and called it a "chapel:" other than keeping brooms and mops in it, the "chapel" is never used.
Scientology has no religious veneration; it has no gods; it does not pray to anything or any one; it performs no religious rites. Scientology exists only to con money out of the gullible.
A Google search on the key words "religion angle" +Hubbard will link to a letter written by Hubbard that explains exactly why he fraudulently called his sinister, criminal business a "church / religion."
