Comment Poor Intel (Score 1) 243

Cry me a river for a corporation which used all the semi-legal dirty tricks in the book to gain monopoly status. I actively seek out ARM based machines because I do not like to live on the Intel plantation. RPI3 is a great little machine. Good enough for surfing, Libreoffice and light development. I also have a Teres netbook from OLIMEX, which is ok for email and libreoffice.

I am running Linux for 20 years now. I once did serious driver fiddling in 1999 or so. Having said that, I would like seL4 to make it big. The large kernels are impossible to secure. Having said that, the Apple M1 CPU is an amazing feat. They apparently kept it a good secret and Intel was caught procrastinating.

...Apple does not sell this CPU into the server market. Intel must hope and pray the CPU will only be available in high end client packages. Because the M1 could of course speed up server workloads and at the same time cut power consumption dramatically. The SPEC results are very clear. And of course a server-type M1 system could have much more RAM.

I dont think Apple will do this, as this is not their business model, but technically and financially they could do this in a whim.
