Comment Re:What's Been Found So Far (Score 1) 368

I would like to point out a few incorrect things with the parent post.

1) The telnet server, while part of the source code on the client, is not ever run by the client, and there are protections within the code to keep it from being run on the client. The reason it is in the code is because some of the source is shared between both the server and the client, and the telnet server is intended to be run on the serverside, presumably for live debugging.

3) This is completely false. Even without the source code, you can see that the EVE servers do not send any information about ships or even most objects within the current system (zone), unless they are within 200km of you. Anything within this 200km is shown to the client anyways, as EVE is very good about giving the player basically all information that is sent to the client. You can see who has entered the system you are in, but this is also shown to you in the client. Knowing their specific location is not possible, as that information is neither sent to the client, nor stored there, unless in the above stated case where they are on the same grid (within 200km) as you.

The Crossing - A New Way to FPS? 184

1up has a look at Arkane Studios' extremely ambitious new project. Called The Crossing, the FPS title looks to combine single and multi-player modes in a new way. From the article: "In the simplest sense, story missions are single-player shooting with an exception: Naturally intelligent human opponents take the place of A.I. There are two types of players: Elites and skirmishers. Elites are gamers playing the game in story mode. They're beefed up, heavily armored, and heavily armed. They have to be able to hold their own against a swarm of skirmish players. Skirmishers are gamers who typically play on multiplayer maps: well-trained, rank-and-file soldiers playing primarily to have some quick fun and increase their rank through defeating the occasional Elite. Skirmish players can also invade story maps and 'possess' A.I.s ala Agent Smith in The Matrix." So even if you're playing through the story, you'll still be challenged by the 'NPCs', all of whom will be played by a real-life human. Sounds like it could either be awesome or a total flop. Which side are you leaning on?

Which Rechargeable Batteries Do You Use? 176

kramer2718 asks: "I go through a lot of batteries in my digital camera, remote controls, etc. I'd like to go to the rechargeable route for the environment and for my pocketbook, but I don't know which rechargeable batteries are the best. Can anyone out there give me some advice about which brand and types of batteries work well?"

Cisco Lost Rights to iPhone Trademark Last Year? 162

An anonymous reader writes "An investigation into the ongoing trademark dispute between Cisco and Apple over the name "iPhone" appears to show that Cisco does not own the mark as claimed in their recent lawsuit. This is based on publicly available information from the US Patent and Trademark office, as well as public reviews of Cisco products over the past year. The trademark was apparently abandoned in late 2005/early 2006 because Cisco was not using it."

Are Hard Disk Warranties Worthless? 187

1984 asks: "Earlier this year I returned a Hitachi 2.5" drive under warranty, and got back a replacement which died after a week or so of light use. More recently a Seagate 200GB desktop IDE disk flaked after a few months use, so I sent it off and received a replacement under warranty. The replacement wouldn't even format. So I RMAed that and got another dead replacement. All the replacement disks were 'refurbished', and I see many instances of similar problems with refurbished replacements when Googling. So I'm asking, what experience are people having with getting replacement disks that work, and continue to do so for something approaching the expected lifetime of the original drive? Are current warranties just a sham?"
