Submission + - Network engineering Q&A site launched

Hamburg writes: Stack Exchange launched a new site for network engineers. It's in question and answer style, content is tagged for filtering and subscribing to topics. A voting system supports quality of posts, leading to so called reputation scores which determine moderation capabilities of the users. It's now 18 days in beta, at this early stage users decide which way it will go, from quality and kind of contributions up to the future design of the site. People there discuss mainly professional subjects such as the best dual-provider design for the enterprise, when to choose fiber instead of copper cabling, and efficient ways for troubleshooting switching loops.

Comment Interface to online compilers (Score 5, Interesting) 70

As I wrote on here on TeX.SE, an interface allowing to use to online compilers would be great. So we could have a slim LyX installation while being able to use a maintained up-to-date TeX distribution instead of installing gigabytes locally on each computer. For example the open source LaTeX web API CLSI could be used.

Submission + - LyX joins the Google Summer of Code 2013

Hamburg writes: LyX joined this year's Google Summer of Code (GSoC 2013) as a mentoring organization. The LaTeX based open-source GUI LyX has been accepted to the GSoC for the first time. With LyX one can start using LaTeX without being used to "program" documents. So it's an important entry point to the (La)TeX world, and a bridge between GUI word processors and LaTeX. This is a great opportunity for its development, now student developers can get financial support for contributing new features: successful contributions will earn a stipend of 5000 USD for the student and 500 USD for the organization, in this case the LyX project, who provides mentors to the students. There are already many project ideas, for example a GUI for editing layouts, a presentation mode, EPUB export, an outliner tool for intuitive writing, retina screen (HiDPI) support, and interactive concurrent editing. Would you like to take part, or do you have further ideas for improvements or features? Send your proposals to the lyx-devel mailing list, or simply comment here, what can be suggested to the LyX mentors.

One should understand the tools for his or her work, more or less, depending on the expectation of the result. MS Office was made easier, but I wouldn't expect as good results and there's not as much control over the document. But home and office users often don't need it, so choosing the easier one is ok.

Those are good points, especially nag and l2tabu! There are also extensive lists, such as this one: Obsolete classes and packages with recommendations for replacement. Sadly, google honors old content and places this first, also naturally because of the backlinks grown over time. A LaTeX beginner should use a new book, a new tutorial, or a good actively maintained web site for getting further information. A good start can also be asking for recommendations in a LaTeX forum.

So you are a young timer like me. :-) Nevertheless, TeX experienced, or interested in? I'm just curious if young people value TeX and LaTeX, today when many impatient people are bound to GUIs, and less interested in the source behind things.

Embedding of PDF images is supported, so scalable. And most formats can be converted to PDF, there are even easy-to-use PDF file printer if a program doesn't directly support it. No need to convert to a bitmap format. Bitmaps are supported, but I would use that only if the image is already a bitmap. And you can embed it floating, for automatically optimized page breaking.

Submission + - Extended TeX: past, present, and future (latex-community.org) 1

Hamburg writes: Frank Mittelbach, member of the LaTeX Project and LaTeX3 developer, reviews significant issues of TeX raised already 20 years ago. Today he evaluates which issues are solved, and which still remain open and why.
Examples issues are managing consecutive hyphens, rivers of vertical spaces and identical words across lines, grid-based design, weighed hyphenation points, and overcoming the the mouth/stomach separation. Modern engines such as pdfTeX, XeTeX and LuaTeX are considered in regard to solutions of important problems in typesetting.
