China To Tap Combustible Ice As New Energy Source 185

lilbridge writes "Huge reserves of "combustible ice" — frozen methane and water — have been discovered in the tundra of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China. Estimates show that there is enough combustible ice to provide 90 years worth of energy for China. Burning the combustible ice may be a far better alternative than letting it just melt, releasing tons of methane into the air."

I must also disagree with this. For certain, the actual battle between 2 players could be seen as taking less skill to accomplish. Certainly, a 1 on 1 PvE encounter takes little skill in general. However, the raid game in these MMO's takes a great deal of skill. A few people have to coordinate a large group of people to complete a task, and a good number of those tasks are by no means simple. I know WoW has mitigated this to some degree, but Everquest would require a couple of strategic-minded raid leaders to properly deploy as many as 72 people against a target, with plenty of variables to take into account. In these situations, the raid leader is like the player in Starcraft, except they don't really know if their units are going to do as they're told. Sounds like some skill is required.

You're suffering from the 'terminology trick.' your ISP offers 6 mbps for $35/month.... that's 6 megaBITS per second. Internet Explorer shows your download speeds in kilo- or megaBYTES per second. So, while you're not getting your full 6 mbps, you're definitely getting more than the 768kbps connection can offer. 6mpbs = roughly 750 KB/s, while the 768kbps = about 96 KB/s. Even as far back as dial-up, this has been a point of contention, as a 56k modem only offers a theoretical max of 7 KB/s, and you'd only realistically see 5 KB/s.

I'd say a lot of this is dependent on what people are 'used to' as far as their music listening goes. I've heard the song "Rooster" by Alice in Chains hundreds of times on the radio... enjoy that song immensely. Downloaded it on Rock Band 2 the other day, which uses the original recording, supposedly. It sounded awful to me, at first. I had to listen to it 5 or 6 more times before I got used to all the 'new' stuff I hadn't been able to hear before on the FM band. If you're used to compressed, or otherwise limited music, hearing a cleaner version is just too unfamiliar to be right.

There is a flaw in your analogy. With food, quality seems to win over crap. With entertainment, that is rarely if ever the case. Case in point: Survivor vs. Firefly. Firefly was a well-written, interesting show, with talented actors. It failed miserably not due to poor content, but poor marketing. Survivor is a show full of amateurs screwing each over repeatedly. Such a show has been successful purely on marketing savvy. EA can churn out as much crap as it wants. As long as it douses it in enough sugar, people will keep thinking it's candy.
