Comment Re:PS (Score 0) 1507

From the cited article: According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), as a result of the national literacy campaign, as of 1987 approximately 75 percent of Iraqi women were literate; however, by year-end 2000, Iraq had the lowest regional adult literacy levels, with the percentage of literate women at less than 25 percent.

So, in 13 year the literacy rate of women dropped by how much? Did an awful lot of women die? Were an awful lot of women lobotomized?

In a country of 25 million, could we estimate a round figure of 10 million adult females - and then that would make it 7.5 million literate adult feamles in 1987: 13 years later, half of those adult females (i.e., 5 million) have disappeared. Is this a tribute to the effectiveness of the UN/US-imposed sanctions? Oft-cited reports put the death toll for children at only half a million during the period of sanctions, but why has nobody mentioned all the women destroyed?
