Comment We Need a Read Only Media (Score 1) 40

This is a side subject, but it's definitely related to the death of BR... I'm perpetually flummoxed that there is no read-only media replacement for CD/DVD/BR. If I want to get a copy of a OS installer, and I have two relatively untrusted, but unrelated machines, I can burn a DVD on one and verify the DVD signature from both. At that point, I'm confident of the DVDs contents. In the modern world of USB-everything, read-write only.. I can't very effectively prevent the two machines from attacking each other (thank you very much USB drivers) and I can't be confident that the installer wasn't modified by the last machine that touched it. Read-only media always seemed like a necessity to me, but the rest of the world seems to feel differently.

My thinking is weâ(TM)ve lost all value in centralized institutions and editorial review. If users donâ(TM)t value experts or authorities over anecdotes, any social media is going to produce garbage. Tweaking Facebook might have some impact, but Iâ(TM)m worried the basic problem is way worse than we realize.

Comment SMS Usually Only Solution Disaster Recovery (Score 2) 164

I toss recovery codes in a safe, if a service supports em. Most donâ(TM)t seem to. That means Iâ(TM)m screwed when I inevitably lose my phone, or if I havenâ(TM)t used the service in 5 years and never migrated my MFA app. SMS keeps ticking, forever. One trip to the phone store and all services are back in business.
