I use LibTomCrypt on some embedded devices. It's a good library and does what I need to do, plus other stuff. I can even configure it easily to not compile the stuff I don't need to use. And on my embedded devices, I have to do that to make things fit. But when testing on a PC, I don't need to configure out anything because I don't have to, so why take the time. And then if my PC code gets grabbed by another application and used where they don't need to optimize anything, and so on, that's where the bloat happens.

That's why I use NoScript to block out all those sites, and only enable them temporarily if I really need the page to load because it's some stupid interactive thing I actually have to interact with.

As an embedded engineer, I've watched the new engineers try and code for a limited environment and it's not easy for them to wrap their heads around the constraints of not having an OS manage tons of memory or not having a GUI display to use or actually caring about the structure of data in a communications protocol they have to create. They want to just run a python script and all that stuff is taken care of for them. Doesn't matter if they have to include 30 libraries from other random people on the internet to do the one simple task they need to do that they could have done themselves in C or C++ with the standard libraries. And we need to hire around 10 or more somewhat experienced people (not even top-notch people) and can't find any. "Hackers" these days are just script-kiddies not real programmers who understand how the systems work. Most programmers are really just coders and not engineers, and if that's all you can hire, then you're going to get all your programs coming out as just a bunch of code and not a nicely engineered product. And yes, Linux and Windows are a big part of the problem too.

In fact, you have to use one, like Pascal, in order to have a secure OS. But once you have that, you can have your C applications run on it just fine.

Because you still have to have good software to properly use the security features provided.

A user has to configure their OS because the developers opinion on how other people should do things is wrong 99% of the time.

All of these issues sound very specific to that machine and it's apparently borked configuration. You likely have a bad driver somewhere and your IT department is incompetent.
