Comment And who gets credit / publication rights? (Score 1) 43

Silly question: is this a way to get around all of the companies/countries that claim that Google is not compensating organizations the create content? I mean, if a Google AI creates the article, the New York times publishes, did Google just bypass all those claims of "stealing" content?

Apologies if the article covers this. It's behind a paywall, so I can't read it. I guess a link that gets around that would be "stealing" the content? It's a shame that articles behind paywalls are advertised here these days.

Comment Sailing Experience? Big Yes to other boat forums! (Score 2) 340

Have you sailed across the open ocean yet? I'm concerned since that boat looks like a racing cruiser. She looks fast, but she also looks like she'd roll on you in a second unless you were paying lots of attention. You're not going to try to sail solo, are you?

Boat forums would be better to post on, and there are many of them. You'd also be able to find some sailors with experience to tell you about gear and the best boats to attempt an around the world cruise.

There are more than enough books out there to inform you about the harsh realities of open water sailing. There's also a few that would make someone foolishly optimistic about first time around the world sailing. Be careful about those books. Floating containers and pirates are more than enough to keep me away from such an endeavor.

Ignore the harsh tone of some of these posts, but don't forget the ocean is one harsh place and not forgiving. Good luck and safe voyage.

Games Workshop Goes After Fan Site 174

mark.leaman writes "BoingBoing has a recent post regarding Games Workshop's aggressive posturing against fan sites featuring derivative work of their game products. 'Game publisher and miniature manufacturer Games Workshop just sent a cease and desist letter to boardgamegeek.com, telling them to remove all fan-made players' aids. This includes scenarios, rules summaries, inventory manifests, scans to help replace worn pieces — many of these created for long out of print, well-loved games...' As a lifelong hobby gamer of table, board, card and miniature games, I view this as pure heresy. It made me reject the idea of buying any Games Workshop (read Warhammer) products for my son this Christmas. Their fate was sealed, in terms of my wallet, after I Googled their shenanigans. In 2007 they forbid Warhammer fan films, this year they shut down Vassal Modules, and a while back they went after retailers as well. What ever happened to fair use?"

Modern Warfare 2 Not Recalled In Russia After All 94

thief21 writes "After claims that console versions Modern Warfare 2 had been recalled in Russia due to complaints from politicians and the gaming public over the infamous airport slaughter scene, it turns out the stories were completely untrue. Activision never released a console version of the game in Russia." Instead, they simply edited the notorious scene out of the PC version. They did this of their own volition, since Russia doesn't have a formal ratings committee.
