That something special is the ability - or inherent tendency - to want. To form objectives. To decide how one wants to spend ones time. To take joy in the unexpected. To hope, to dream, to feel. Yeah, these are hard, or even impossible, to test objectively for, but that doesn't make them not a real distinction.
