Iâ(TM)ve been self-hosting since the â90s and, frankly, with the advances in NAS, itâ(TM)s easier than ever. I donâ(TM)t have to worry about other people training on my data, embedding advertising in my local services, or how little theyâ(TM)re investing in their security practices. They still need to address consumer ISP restrictions on static IPs, port blocks, deny-listing in anti-spam infrastructure, DNS/rDNS, and other things, but I much prefer a world where I can opt out of being monetized for my data.

Nokiaâ(TM)s Meego was absolutely a viable and innovative open source alternative, but a Microsoft lackey took over as CEO, wrote an idiotic memo about burning platforms, then abandoned it for the garbage barge that was Windows Phone. So, maybe look in a mirror. Jolla keeps the dream alive with Sailfish, but itâ(TM)s super niche. More mobile manufacturers should really provide it as a non-Google siphon alternative, but I doubt carriers have any appetite to push it through their channels.
