Thank you. I understand that evoking images of giant floating trash islands may help bring attention to the issue. But it is blatantly misleading and may be doing more harm than good. The pictures in TFA show mounds of trash ... but always on the deck of a boat, or piled up neatly next to the podium at a press conference. At least show a picture of the area and explain "The water looks normal at first glance, but in this area are xx tons of plastic waste." Otherwise people are going to be suspicious about the conspicuous lack of photos of this "Giant collection of fishing nets, plastic containers and other discarded items" as described in TFA.

In my city the police have an agreement with many downtown businesses to monitor their security cameras live. I once toured their "command center" where the walls are lined with dozens of monitors showing video feeds from all over the city. The room is staffed 24/7 365 days a year. One of the workers who monitor the cameras (among other duties) remarked that they were essentially useless. The city never bothered to label them, so no one knew where any of the cameras were located.

It's true that the firmware would be limited to a specific device, and the precedent is far more dangerous than the code itself. However no system is perfect. There is at least some chance that some exploit could be derived from the custom firmware that helps break the security of other devices. A (not perfect) analogy would be giving out the combination to your home safe because, since your doors are locked, you assume no one will get a chance to access the safe.

Licensing was one of the biggest hurdles of the original show. They had to buy licenses for every movie for the episodes that aired on the Sci-Fi channel and Comedy Central. Some episodes have never been released on disc because of licensing restrictions. There were also plenty of movies that they never riffed because the owners refused to license it at all, or set a prohibitively high price (we're talking decades-old, low budget movies).

That is why Rifftrax was the most ingenious solution to the licensing issues. Created by the cast and writers of the later episodes of MST3K- they sell a stand-alone audio track of the riffs. This circumvents the licensing issues entirely and even lets them do new releases which would have been impossible in the original show. The downside is that you need to have your own copy of the movie and follow the instructions, or use the free app they provide, to sync the audio from the riff track to the movie. My former college did a study and found that most students had terrible critical thinking skills. Their solution was to make every class show a four-minute youtube video about critical thinking. I was taking 5 courses so I had to watch it 5 times. It was hilarious and sad that they believed they could improve critical thinking by applying the same repetition and rote memorization which caused the problem in the first place. It is indicative of how the education system is not capable of teaching critical thinking.
