What we did was put our macintosh on the PC/Samba
network with a product called "Dave Client". It
is a Netbios client program for the Mac and lets
you network it like a Windows PC.

smbtar (SAMBA tool for backups) on our Linux box
to back up both the Windows PCs and Macintoshes
that way.
