Stone Tools Found On Crete Push Back Humans' Maritime History 176

The New York Times reports that stone tools discovered on the Greek island of Crete, and reported last month at an academic conference, are strong evidence for rethinking the maritime capabilities of early humans. The researchers who found the tools (hand-axes, cleavers, and scrapers) estimate them to be at least 130,000 years old; if they're right, humans have been traveling long distances at sea (Crete is 200 miles from the northern African coastline) for at least several tens of thousands of years longer than earlier believed.

Photoshop 1.0 Recreated On iPhone 103

Dotnaught writes "Photoshop co-creator Russell Brown asked Ansca Mobile to re-create Photoshop 1.0, originally introduced in 1990, for the iPhone. The resulting app, created in three days using the Corona SDK, was distributed to 50 attendees of an event celebrating Photoshop's 20th anniversary. Programmer Evan Kirchhoff in a blog post explains that Ansca took the project on to prove its claims about how Corona makes iPhone development faster."

Fucking brilliant. That's exactly what it is. People forget that we're not talking about serious debate in the scientific community. We're talking about vested moneyed interest in the billions of dollars fighting against any evidence to protect profit against reasoned scientific debate. If you believe that cigarettes cure cancer, you are not just scientifically radical or exploring a different theory. You are directly supporting a view that protects the interests of profit over the interests of truth and the public good. That's not science, that's hucksterism. It isn't wrong to deny people certification when they are deliberately endangering people. That's why certification was invented. Before the AMA, anyone could make "medicine" and sell it on the street. Plus, what's the harm in changing our habits to embrace technologies and innovations which do not support Global Warming? What would it hurt? So, we find out later that the billion-to-one chance that Global Warming was not human caused, so what. Then we can go back to burning coal if people want, and there will still be some.
