Journal GMontag's Journal: The Left and the Police 11

It is quite amazing how some on the Left will not admit that they cause the monsters that they run from, both real and imagined.

Some time ago I mentioned that the 1968 Democrat National Convention included a battle in the streets between Leftists. How that battle can be viewed as anything else is baffling, but someone managed to spout out an ill-educated objection not long ago. Forgot where or who, but it was the typical Leftist challenge of "not they weren't."

On one side, we had the City of Chicago government armed with an armed force of almost if not 100% union government workers and almost 100% voting Democrat in a reliable manner. Can anybody of this world refute that? The police of large cities are tools of the Left and vote Left in a reliable manner election after election. They behave in the classic Leftist manner: if their power is challenged they will crack your skull, or worse. Just ask Trotsky.

The city had a union supporting mayor; The Honorable Richard J. Daley was a high-profile Democrat in the US for decades and was in control of the Chicago police at the time. One of his most famous miss-statements was "The police are not there to create disorder. The police are there to preserve disorder." He even used the snow removal crews to insure that the portions of the city that did not vote for his regime stayed immobilized from the first snow of the season to the last. Note to some readers, snow season in Chicago is approximately September through April . . .

Voting was strictly controlled. If a precinct did not vote for The Party then their voting machines ended up in the Chicago River.

With all of that, some troublemakers from NY and CA decided to crash The Party in 1968, but as they were not "in the club", they were clubbed by other Leftists. Pretty much the same way anybody who does not support Marx, Mao and Stalin is treated in Berkeley.

Bizarre, simply bizarre.

In the above case, the administration was from the Left, elected by an overwhelming number of the votes that the Left bothered to count, the police voted Left, the police demonstrated every bit of tolerance that the Left can muster, but somehow it was a non-Left phenomenon in Leftist revisionist folklore.

  • I heard it like this:
Daley == Centrist (elected for posts as both Republican and Democrat) with strong interest in keeping Chicago as orderly as possible.
Yippes et al == Screaming Liberal PeaceNiks with no love of either major party -- as demonstrated by protesting the Democratic convention, Nixon, and various other highly political people/events.

Conflict was Centerists versus excessively leftist yahoos.

You don't have to like either group, but I certainly feel that those who were clubbed and those w
    • Umm, I would like to see where/when Daley was EVER a Republican [chipublib.org]. As a matter of fact, every challenger to him in the general election was a Republican.

Sadly, I suspect that you are another victim of the Revisionists. But do not fear, my journal will bring you back to normal :)
      • Your link is only for his Mayoral history. He held other offices, and when he ran for the state Sentate in 1936, he ran and was elected as a Republican.

        Have a look [wikipedia.org].
Of course, he did this in a typically policital-monster-Daley kinda way and quickly flipped back to the Democratic party.

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around the concept of : Daley == Lefty
        • Ah, like that current "Republican" mayor of NYC, the Limosine Liberal who ran on the Republican ticket because he could not get nominnated as a Dem.

No, wrapping one's head around Daley as a Leftist is as easy as identifying Castro or Mao as a Leftist. Skip the hype and look at the actions.
          • Of course you don't have to take me up on this, but I'd love it if you made a JE that defined what you consider to be Left, Right and Center. I'm not saying this to be antagonistic, though I'm sure it might come across that way because I generally don't reply when I agree with a story -- just when I have a concern on an item -- I'd really like to see a solid list of what things indicate what leanings because I am sensitive about such labels.

            • For me there are no definitive lists. The following are general guides with examples.

Left means less personal choice since more choice is made for you by the state.

Unfortunatly, many Leftists will try to tell you that the government telling you what to build on your land is somehow not an infringment on your choice. They say that it is "for the good of society", when in reality it is just an effort to impose their taste on others.

Right means more personal choice, fewer impositions by the state.

              • ok, so to take porn as an example ... I don't consume much porn, but I like the concept of having it around -- as long as the participants in its creation were consenting adults. The main reason I'd never consume non-consentual porn (even if free) is moral; it repels me. I approve of the fact that, even without consumers, using children or force are both crimes on their own and so we've always got grounds to convict those who produce such material.

But ... if some group favors a ban on *veiwing* kiddie po
                • But ... if some group favors a ban on *veiwing* kiddie porn, is that a leftist view? Does their reasoning matter? (e.g. if A. says, "It's sick and wrong -- completely immoral" and B. says, "It gives monetary incentive to film the abuse of children", can their reason be Right when their proposed solution is Left?)

That is exactly the view that the feminist movement has had about viewing adult porn, so that one is already answered. Yes, it is a leftist position.

Say A. had known-good well water in the past
  • The brass may be Democrats, but the rank and file is pretty much split. And why do people keep harping on the Democratic Convention in 1968? What about the Republican Convention of 1968 in Miami. People died during those riots, no one died in Chicago.
    • As for Chicago, that may be what the deal is today, especially since they can not even "deliver" Cook County as a whole to the Democrats, but in 1968 the entire police force was pretty much voting Democrat.

Secondly, maybe the Left does not care that their brothers and sisters died in Miami? I believe that was a big Leftist mob vs. a Leftist constabulary too. At least maybe I missed the Jack Welch vs. William F. Buckley, Jr. legions battling with each other.
