George Will
February 15, 2004

WASHINGTON -- In the more than 250 days until Nov. 2, John Kerry can answer questions that linger in spite of, or because of, all he has said so far. Such as:

Other than denoting your disapproval, what does the adjective mean in the phrase ``special interest''? Is the National Education Association a special interest? The AFL-CIO?

More where that came from.

  • The lack of semantic clarity in the use of the term "special interest" is a particular pet peeve of me.
  • They're (NEA and the AFL-CIO) both special interests. IMHO, Special interests are anyone that succeeds in getting a elected or appointed official charged with running a populace to vote in their interest, regardless if that interest is in the best interest of the populace (or even the officials direct constituants) as a whole.

    For example:
The RIAA is a special interest group because they succeeded in getting musical copyrights extended, even though it is against the best interests of the american people
  • he is against Republican special interest. Democrat special interests are his bread and butter.

When you don't know what you are doing, do it neatly.
