Journal GMontag's Journal: Papa John's Herndon, VA AAAAGGGGGGGGGHHHH! 12

The other day I got a spiffy "Free 2 Topping Pizza" cupon in the mail from John Schnatter. I was so impressed that when I arrived home late Friday night, I decided to partake in John's generocity and order a pizza.

Now, is it too much to ask that the people who speak the best English in the store also be the same people who answer the phone and/or take orders? Seems that the backwards method that EVERY business in the DC area uses is one of direct contact with the customers is for learning English.

Of course, I do not care what language anybody else chooses to speak and I really don't care how others chose to run their businesses. As a customer I DO care about my "transaction experience."

So, I called the store and got a broken-English accent from a young sounding, and probably lovely, lady.

After reciting my number and she reciting my address, I stated that I have a cupon for a free two topping pizza.

Her: "Large?"

Me: "I don't know, it just says free 2 topping pizza, I will have pepperoni and Italian sausage."

Her: "Large?"

Me: "The cupon does not say."

Her: "That will be $X."

Me: "I have a cupon for a FREE pizza."

Her: "Hold please."

"Manager" answers.

Me: "For crying out loud! I just want a freaking pepproni and sausage pizza and I have a cupon for a free 2 topping pizza!"

Him: "Calm down, you have me on the phone now and I speak English fine. What do you want?"

Me: [angoushed sigh] "I STILL want a pepperoni and Italian sausage. Do you want the coupon number?"

Him: "It should be there in 25 to 35 min."

I hang up phone.

AAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Yes it showed up on time and no visible unpleasentries on/in the pizza. I tipped the driver $3 and gave him the cupon, thanked him nicely.

  • There was no unpleasantness because they already blew their nose with the dough.

Of course, your thinking about customer service and satisfaction makes me wonder why so much tech support is heading to New Delhi...
  • Heh, we had Popa Johns last night for dinner. Large thin crust with pineapple. It was decent. Of course you cannot get a decent fucking pizza here in Maryland (ask Mekka, he knows).

    • blinder said this: Large thin crust with pineapple.
Then this: Of course you cannot get a decent fucking pizza here in Maryland

See a connection here? :) Hint: Fruit does not belong on a goddammed pizza!!!
      • mmm.... pepperoni and pineapple...

too bad i spent most of the day making chicken soup. :P
        • Did you put pomegranates and raspberries in your chicken soup? ;) I could use some of that chicken soup, think I've got a head cold.
          • No, I put tomatoes (fresh romas as well as canned sauce and diced), onion, celery, bay leaves, and lemons... I actually made chicken soup using an actual real chicken, though. :)

Yes, lemon and tomatoes are fruit. Yes, they're in my soup. But it tastes wunnerful, nonetheless.
  • I used to be a phone chick for a pizza place -- two summers in a row, actually. But I found it was the customers who were difficult to understand, and more than once I was *very* grateful for the ability to shift into Spanish with ease.

You'd think that pizza places would have enough of a decent English-speaking labor market to select from...

    • I don't know where you live Bethanie, but Northern VA does not have a ready supply of English speaking people for low level jobs. I just moved to the midwest from there and I am amazed at how many Americans happily hold these jobs. I don't know what that says....regional economy or work ethics?
      • Well, at the time I lived in Southern California. I was college-aged. All the other kids I worked with were white & [upper] middle-class, too. They didn't have too much of a work ethic, but I think they needed some easy way to earn the money to pay for their car insurance.

  • AAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Come on Dean, is your own blog [blogforamerica.com] not enough? Why do you have to go posting under an alias on another site too? (Is this your way of balancing out all the far-left rants on your main blog?) ;-)

  • http://www.papajohnsonline.com/index.html [papajohnsonline.com] has treated me very well. I dunno if you could've used the coupon if you ordered that way or not, though.
But I love online ordering... I can take my time... no waiting for the toppings to be read to me, no confusion about costs... it's great.

However, the once or twice I ordered via the phone, they managed to charge me more for my pizza than the online price. So I've learned my lesson.
    • I found out the hard way that the deals on their website cannot be gotton through the store. I had an online coupon for something-or-other that would have cost me $10.99. Their site went down halfway through my order so I had to order the old-fashioned way. My total suddenly became $17 for the same thing. I complained to several people about that but had no luck in getting my coupon honored in the store. Grr...
