Journal GMontag's Journal: Discussion: Are California Gun Restrictions Racist? 9

Time was when just any old oppressed group could walk into the California Capital, brandishing shotguns, and let their lawmakers know how they felt about an issue.

All that changed in the 1960's and California changed the State laws in a manner that made this time-honored practice illegal. By coincidence it was a group of oppressed black men from Oakland who were the last to give a peaceful gun show in Sacremento.

Is California really a closet racist state that wants to keep minorities disarmed?

Discuss.

I'm as white as they get, and I'm pretty sure that if I asked for a conceal carry permit or something, I wouldn't get one. :)
    • Actually you could get a CCW, but only if you were a citizen and had good reason to do so.

In researching my own states CCW laws, I found out info about other state's laws. My first write up is here [slashdot.org]

      • I'm a natural citizen. From what little reading I've done, in California, a CCW is issued by the County Sherrif, Contra Costa County in my case. The "good reason" is the key piece. Apparantly, whether to issue a CCW is at the sole discretion of the Sherrif, based on what excuse I claim on my application.

FOr purposes of discussion, I'm rather of the opinion that the 2nd (?) ammendment ought to be taken at face value, and that we ought to have a Shall Issue or No Permit Required arrangement.
      • Minnesota has recently passed legislation to make CCW permits more accessible and equitable. Before, you had to demonstrate a need to your local sheriff, and he could still deny it.
Now, you just need to apply, complete a training course, be mentally competent, and pass a background check.

I'm waiting on mine... dunno when I'll actually get it. But I will do it eventually.
        • That's how it works here (Oklahoma) as well. Last time I looked about 100k people had it. You can't carry into bars or government buildings, but it works pretty well and I am glad to have mine.
          • Yeah, if you don't want people to carry inside your establishment in MN, you are required to post a sign with 2-inch-high letters. Our company has such a sign, as does the clinic downstairs. However, the employer can allow individual employees to carry on-site.
      • By citizen, I meant to type "resident." CA does not grant CCW's to non-residents.
