Journal GMontag's Journal: Oh, Silly Sony: SACD 3

So, yesterday I ventured to The Best Buy to spend the certificate that my son gave me for birthday/Christmas.

I am sure this is old news to y'all, but it is new to me. There were oodles of decentlyl priced SACDs with little labels saying you must have a SACD player to play them. So, does my new-ish Alpine system support this format? Idunno, gotta check the book and the website was no help. The latter may be an indication that they do not support this.

On a related note, I did not purchase anything yet. The lines were too long and I think I will wait until payday and use the gift card towards a Koss home theater and new remote (if needed).

Oh, Silly Sony: SACD

  • First, Hybrid SACDs will play on regular CD players as well. Apparently Alpine does make SACD players, although I'd expect if yours did there would be some marking to that effect on the case...

Ideally, I think I'd go for Hybrid SACDs where possible. Failing that, ordinary CDs are perfectly good quality IMHO, and they'll still work whatever you upgrade to ;-)

    • Regular CDs sound fine to me in the Hydrogen Powered Hacker Jeep. It was just seeing a Miles Davis SACD with all of his tunes for about $10 that caught my eye.

I need to look more if the Alpine CDM-7874 will play the disk.

Looks like the answer's no, unless it's a hybrid disk. For the car, I'd suspect SACD would be wasted anyway: the sounds of burning hydrogen will cut off the fine detail a regular CD misses anyway.

General Clark? Colonel's a much better fit with those nutty policies!

Dead? No excuse for laying off work.
