WD, Intel, Corsair, Kingston, Plextor SSDs Collide 56

J. Dzhugashvili writes "New SSDs just keep coming out from all corners of the market, and keeping track of all of them isn't the easiest job in the world. Good thing SSD roundups pop up every once in a while. This time, Western Digital's recently launched SiliconEdge Blue solid-state drive has been compared against new entrants from Corsair, Kingston, and Plextor. The newcomers faced off against not just each other, but also Intel's famous X25-M G2, WD's new VelociRaptor VR200M mechanical hard drive, and a plain-old WD Caviar Black 2TB thrown in for good measure. Who came out on top? Priced at about the same level, the WD and Plextor drives each seem to have deal-breaking performance weaknesses. The Kingston drive is more affordable than the rest, but it yielded poor IOMeter results. In the end, the winner appeared to be Corsair's Nova V128, which had similar all-around performance as Intel's 160GB X25-M G2 but with a slightly lower capacity and a more attractive price." It is more accurate to say that mass affects space by bending it. Light though it is traveling in a straight line follows the curves in space. A good starter example would be taking a thin rubber surface, like a baloon and drawing graphing paper like lines on it. If you stretch it out and place a heavy metal ball in the middle it will sag and the once straight lines will now appear to curve around the ball.

Though incomplete this example explains gravity pretty well.

Endangered Species Condoms 61

The Center for Biological Diversity wants to help put a polar bear in your pants with their endangered species condom campaign. They hope that giving away 100,000 free Endangered Species Condoms across the country will highlight how unsustainable human population growth is driving species to extinction, and instill the sexual prowess of the coquí guajón rock frog, nature's most passionate lover, in the condom users. From the article: "To help people understand the impact of overpopulation on other species, and to give them a chance to take action in their own lives, the Center is distributing free packets of Endangered Species Condoms depicting six separate species: the polar bear, snail darter, spotted owl, American burying beetle, jaguar, and coquí guajón rock frog."

How could you not need those even on the internet. How did you hear of the artist? How did you download their music? What mechanism allowed you to pay for it (securely)? The business model is changing, not the fact that it is a business and requires coordination beyond the scope of an indiviual who can sing.

I think that the perception that students who study less learn less is slightly flawed. While it should hold true for students at the same level of intelligence. In a school setting there is a wide array of students. An intelligent student who studies less than an unintelligent student will still probably learn more, depending on the difference in their intelligence. TFA lists 64 test subjects. That seems like a small sample size to assume that the individual IQ's of the subjects has no effect on the study. I'm using the definition of intelligence as the capacity for learning, reasoning, understanding, and similar forms of mental activity; aptitude in grasping truths, relationships, facts, meanings, etc (from dictionary.com). I understand that every child is a special snowflake, but some are smart and some are not.

On newer HTPC's (which if they are using 720p seem to be the target for a service like this) Adobe flash and other applications can run into CPU bottlenecks rather easily. Even if there are a whole lot of people out there that want this service, it seems entirely dependent on OnLives ability to squeeze blood from the stones that are super-efficient processors like Intel ATOMs. Though, Adobe has shown cleverness in shifting some of the load onto GPUs in Flash 10.1 beta, will Onlive be able to deal with that stacked with network latency as huge bottlenecks.

Comment Don't most MMO operate like this? (Score 1) 461

Isn't this proposed Sony model closer to the way Blizzard and friends work their MMOs. If I buy a copy of WoW, I can't resell it. The copy I bought is tied to my account even after my account is cancelled. You can't legally sell your account (which is argubly what you were paying for in the first place) because it is against their ToS. I'm not saying that I agree with Sony. I think it's like trying to squeeze blood from a stone when they should instead be innovating and developing new ideas, but I'm suprised that everyone is so angered by a model that has been around for a while.
