Hmmmm... perhaps he shouldn't have been going 15 over on a rain soaked street.. I suspect that had more to do with him being killed than just the pole being there.
You also have to keep in mind that high current distribution lines have one hell of an EMF field around them. I don't think that they have yet found a good enough method to insulate them from ground so as to put them in almost direct contact with it.
Ever wonder why they are placed so high and so far apart?
