Bear in mind also that hard disk space has become more prevalient as well. 50k bytes for an image is a drop in the bucket for most people these days.
I thought that you couldn't patent an idea that was a direct result of a mathematical formula.
I'm a rock-climber and that's why Wild COuntry's Friends (cams) had a patent trigger rather than a patented cam; the cam's constant angle made against a crack was a direct result of logarithms and couldn't be patented. This meant that other cam manufacturers had to use awkward trigger designs, or pay loyalties.
