Journal FroMan's Journal: ATI drivers 2

ATI's newest Radeon drivers are out for linux. :-)

It'll be nice to check them out tonight to see how they perform. The previous iteration I have heard slowed them down a little bit, I really didn't have much chance to determine any differences as I had hardware changes around the last release. The "fixed in this release" page is quite short for these though, mainly mentioning FSAA improvements, which is not a major concern for me, but the beta testers seem to think this release is pretty major regardless of the lack of mentioned things in the fixes.

Anyone else out there use ATI's cards in linux?

  • ATI cards work quite well, but they can be a bit difficult to get it to work properly with acceleration. My Thinkpad T30 has an ATI chipset, which works just fine with Linux. On the other hand, my desktop has an NVidia card, and it was a snap to set up.

In summary, an ATI card will be just fine for a Linux user, though it can require some setup and digging on Google if your distribution does not recognize it and configure it automatically. Depending on the distribution, you may have to locate and install a
  • So, does this mean that the use of NVidia is supported by a federal tax?

    :o)

I have used ATI on Linux, and survived. It was ... fine. I'm not a graphics maven (I'm just a database guy), but ... it worked.

So, I guess ATI is OK for database guys. I'm sure liberal developers especially would use NVidia.
