The general consensus is that price and feature-wise the two companies are identical or near-identical. Unless you are a major customer with deep pockets, you won't get significantly better deals with either one. The consensus is also that Altera's software is "better" than Xilinx's and Xilinx's customer support is "better" than Altera's
