They havenâ(TM)t forgotten: Starlink will fund cheap access to space, increasing human presence in high Earth orbit and beyond, thereby actually permitting us to do something about an earthbound asteroid. On another note; anyone playing KSP will point out that heliocentric spacetelescopes are much better to spot earthbound asteroids than terrestrial ones. Funding Starship will help placing those as well.

Maybe you should read a Muskography before you start theorizing? Elon was bullied to the extent of hospitalization and corrective surgery, ever an outsider to his peers. After moving to his father, things got somehow worse at the homefront. Anyhow, even with a bormal childhood standard of living in SA was was never above that of most western countries. So I also name your comment horseshit, although for the opposite reasons of the reply above.

Exactly, and Musk didnâ(TM)t. He started his career in Canada as an impoverished african immigrant doing stray jobs, like clearing a furnace of slag/soot. With a few thousand dollars from his father, and a PC, he started accumulating wealth together with his brother Kimbal as they founded the yellow-pages search engine and mapping software zip2. Rest is history.
