Comment The infrastructure for EVs is surprisingly expensi (Score 1) 265

I write as I sit in a house with no power. Why no power? We are upgrading our electric service to support a car charger. This require scoordinating with the local electric utility to find out if the local grid can support the requested upgrade (youâ(TM)re on the hook for an upgraded transformer if not) a new meter box, load centre, cabling from the pole to the (new) weatherhead, and having no power for 6-8 hours. This will cost about $4500. This is before we even install the charger. How many landlords and people on fixed incomes are going to see this as an option?

Electric wonâ(TM)t be viable for a lot of people until the âoelast mileâ problem is solved.

I worked in a office where about once a year one of the employees would "spill" coffee on her laptop..usually a week or so after she noticed a deployment of new laptops in some other department. [...]

This ruse doesn't work on ThinkPads. Co-worker spilled an entire litre of water directly onto the keyboard of a company owned running laptop. Hell to pay if laptop ruined. Unplug, pull out battery, pull disk drive, dry face-down on cookie rack for 24 hours. Reassemble, reboot. Laptop worked for another 18 months. IT department never knew.

Boy Builds Wall-Climbing Machine Using Recycled Vacuums 96

Joe McIntosh writes "Hibiki Kono just might be a boy genius. The 13-year-old decided he wanted to climb vertical surfaces like his hero, Spiderman. So, he used two 1,400-watt recycled vacuum cleaners and a little bit of elbow grease to make a machine that allows him to scale walls. Kono has been scaling the walls of his UK school and has told the media that he hopes his invention will help window washers eliminate clumsy ladders from their daily routine."

Building a Homemade Nuclear Reactor In NYC 219

yukk writes "Mark Suppes, a web developer for Gucci, is working on his own personal fusion reactor. His work in a NYC warehouse using $35,000 of his own money and $4,000 raised on a website has made him the 38th independent researcher recognized as creating a working fusion reactor. How's that for a hobby?"

Doctor Slams Hospital's "Please" Policy 572

Administrators at England's Worthing Hospital are insisting that doctors say the magic word when writing orders for blood tests on weekends. If a doctor refuses to write "please" on the order, the test will be refused. From the article: "However, a doctor at the hospital said on condition of anonymity that he sees the policy as a money-saving measure that could prove dangerous for patients. 'I was shocked to come in on Sunday and find none of my bloods had been done from the night before because I'd not written "please,"' the doctor said. 'I had no results to guide treatment of patients. Myself and a senior nurse had to take the bloods ourselves, which added hours to our 12-hour shifts. This system puts patients' lives at risk. Doctors are wasting time doing the job of the technicians.'"

You do realize that this particular law is in place in Ontario and Quebec because we were following suit from Alberta and BC?

There is currently no provincial regulation prohibiting the use of electronic handheld devices whilst operating a vehicle in Alberta. Apparently some people in eastern canada have the central Alberta hamlet of Sherwood Park confused with the entire province of Alberta. "Yeah, it's out west somewhere." Just one more reason for our western annoyance with Torontonians and Ontario in general.
