I wrote CAD software for five years and simulation sofware for another six and I guarantee that if you master what makes OO useful, you can shine. The main difficulty is getting this type of code past the old timers who swear that fortran is it and will be it for ever but then start using the latest OO construction that exist in fortran 90 (or who knows what the latest number is).
Using OO you can create bridges that would cause a complete redesign in a procedural language. Those bridges end up as features and that is what makes the difference! Look into the leading commercial CAD or simulation software out there, I would bet that most is OO because that is what allowed the features that people bought
