Does it now? I just launched IE to check it (easier than logging out of everything in Firefox) and the text above the login box said "Sign in to Gmail with your Google Account".

Well you didn't probe far enough. If you try to log in with a Google account it will not work. What I'm trying to figure out why this article was even posted, as if it's some kind of new news...GMail has been offering invitation codes via mobile phone for quite some time now.
