Comment Re:What are the plans to combat rampant cheating? (Score 1) 520

As an operator of a site dedicated to producing cheats, I would like to know what Blizzard is going to do to encourage cheating. The site I administrate (EdgeofNowhere, formerly Blizzhackers until Blizzard deployed some lawyers) has over one hundred and fifty thousand registered users, and I believe this represents a demographic that Blizzard should not ignore. Diablo II was great for that, but it's starting to run out of steam; can we expect Diablo III to be just as fun to hack?

Comment Re:If he's doing the Hobbit next then... (Score 1) 277

I thought that Hellboy 2 was significantly more influenced by Dunsany than Lovecraft. The reference to 'bethmoora' (butchered as the context is) makes it clear where del Tormo is drawing inspiration from. This is in keeping with the Ogdru-Jahad and other miscellaneous bits of theogony established in the original Hellboy comics, though. All of that bears far more resemblance to Dunsany's "Gods of Pegana" than any piece of the Cthulhu mythos (though Lovecraft's dreamlands stories are close). I for one, was very happy to see a director acknowledge Dunsany, as he is so often passed up in favor of Lovecraft. On the subject of The Hobbit movie, I think that Hellboy 2 clearly showed that del Tormo is very capable of creating very Tolkienesque plotlines, but I think his distinct visual style migt be a bad fit for a direct adaptation of Tolkien's work.

Are College Students Techno Idiots? 297

ict_geek writes "Are college students techno idiots? Despite the inflammatory headline, Inside Higher Ed asks an interesting question. The article refers to a recent study by ETS, which analyzed results from 6,300 students who took its ICT Literacy Assessment. The findings show that students don't know how to judge the authoritativeness or objectivity of web sites, can't narrow down an overly broad search, and can't tailor a message to a particular audience. Yikes. According to the article: 'when asked to select a research statement for a class assignment, only 44 percent identified a statement that captured the assignment's demands. And when asked to evaluate several Web sites, 52 percent correctly assessed the objectivity of the sites, 65 percent correctly judged for authority, and 72 percent for timeliness. Overall, 49 percent correctly identified the site that satisfied all three criteria.'" If they are, they're not the only ones.

Does Anyone Still Use Token Ring? 185

blanchae asks: "Does anyone still use Token Ring, or is it dead? I remember hearing about 100 mbps TR a few years ago but nothing since. I remember that the strong point of TR over Ethernet was the QOS and the consistent response time. Does the banking community still use TR?"

Sudo vs. Root 327

lessthan0 writes "In Mac OS X, the root account is disabled by default. The first user account created is added to the admin group and that user can use the sudo command to execute other commands as root. The conventional wisdom is that sudo is the most secure way to run root commands, but a closer look reveals a picture that is not so clear." The article is about OSX but the debate is a little older ;)

Maryland Votes To Ban Diebold Voting Machines 240

vandon writes "Computerworld.com reports: 'The state Maryland House of Delegates this week voted 137-0 to approve a bill prohibiting election officials from using AccuVote-TSx touch-screen systems in 2006 primary and general elections. The legislation calls for the state to lease paper-based optical-scan systems for this year's votes. State Delegate Anne Healey estimated the leasing cost at $12.5 million to $16 million for the two elections.'"

Novell Returns to the SUSE Name 170

soren42 writes "It appears that Novell has decided to rename their enterprise desktop line SUSE, once again. According to an announcement at CeBIT, Novell will be releasing the next version of their desktop product under the name SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop - ditching the moniker Novell Linux Desktop. Naming aside, it looks like the features will be there to make it a strong desktop competitor."
