So I am looking to do two different things and am unsure if free software exists for them

1. I need to break a 9 GB .mpg file up, is there an app that does this. Also is there anything that will rotate an mpg 90 degrees? I need this for a much smaller file.

2. I want to capture real player feeds into mpg so I can listen to stuff while driving over break. My current method seems to be to play real player to the line-out, cable that to line-in and use another app to capture that to .wav, lame will then convert to .mp3, or I can just toss the wavs on the ipod.

Is there anything that will remove the line in-out schtuff?

Thanks :)

  • For the 9MB file, is this a question of breaking it into playable segments, or just into segments that can later be reassembled into the whole file? For the former, you will likely need a video editor; for the latter, there is likely a free solution. It would take less than an hour, I think, to write a splitter, and that would be mostly UI. As far as rotating ninety degrees, that is also likely the domain of a video editing package. It would require that each frame be decompressed, rotated as a bitmap,
    • well I'm trying to get a 9GB show I recorded on my tv card to a friend. She's on a mac and there are various issues with the file being this big such that I'd like to be able to make it smaller. While I'd like it if they were playable independantly, as long as she could reconnect them on her mac it would be fine.

I think I've found somewhat of a solution for the real player thing.

Found and app called scanrec [davee.com] that will basically capture all the audio streams on your computer, whether they are the output i

      • Goto windowsupdate.com. One of the updates should be Microsoft Movie Maker. It has the ability to split videos into smaller scenes. It works by loading the video and it splits it into different sceneces automagically. Then you can select the scenes for the final project. All you need to do is take the first ## scenes and save. Then repeat with the next ## scenes and save. etc ...

Just to warn you, if the original video is 9gigs, it will take a LONG time to load. I'd recommend loading the video and go
