You have the same problem in the venerable table top game industry: people (fans really) willing to work irrationally hard for the chance to be close to their hobby without commensurate compensation. When the industry begins to fade, and it's clear what they do is actually work, there is inevitable disillusionment.
What's the solution? Also like the tabletop gaming industry, economics is telling us there are too many companies. Yes, fans want an enormous selection, but the business model is unsustainable. However, also like the tabletop gaming industry, there will always be some shmoe willing to work for a buck an hour for the chance to be a game developer. Smart people, those who can do anything else, those that don't see games as a calling, would be wise to flee.

The HIV virus, a progenitor to full blown AIDS has eluded all attempts at a vaccine since it was discovered sometime in the 1970's. The major problem with developing a vaccine initially was isolating the virus. Conventional viruses are often defeated with existing drugs, or after being tested against new compounds. HIV has been unique, and staggering in it's ability to resist all attempts at treatment by mutating its own genetic code. HIV is able to resist, with great effectiveness, any drug or combination drug-therapy that is used against it."

BUCHAREST (Reuters) - Pirated Microsoft Corp software helped Romania to build a vibrant technology industry, Romanian President Traian Basescu told the company's co-founder Bill Gates on Thursday.
Basescu was meeting the software giant's chairman in Bucharest to celebrate the opening of a Microsoft global technical center in the Romanian capital.

After querying them about how they knew the site would produce traffic they stated the site was going to be running PHPProxy (an open source web proxy). The traffic was a result of him and his contacts (nearly one thousand of them) using the site to bypass his school's firewall in order to view their MySpace pages and get access to their MSN messengers. Given all the attention social networking sites have recently received and the various laws attempting to block or control access to them I feel guilty and unsure making this available. Are there legal implications that I need to worry about? Could I be held liable if one of the students got in trouble? Most importantly, what's the moral thing to do?"

No wonder the rest of the world think we're idiots: let's blame everyone else and take absolutely no responsibility for our own actions. I'm fat, it must be McDonalds fault. I stuck my hand in a running snow-blower, it must be the manufacturers fault. My kid is an asshat and shot 10 random strangers, it must be the videogames fault.
Hopefully the coming pandemic will actually be engineered just for these kinds of people...
